Description
Another update about my personal rig. Today we take a trip to the plating shop. I show the chemicals and procedures that they're going to use and I also take some time to show some of the finished work at Specialty Plating in North Vancouver.
The video documents a mid-project update in Linus Tech Tips’ Personal Rig Update 2012 series, focusing on the author’s trip to a plating shop to remove powder coating from computer case parts and to explore potential gold plating options. The segment begins with the author loading parts into his car and heading to Specialty Plating in North Vancouver, explaining that the aim is to strip paint from TJ07 components and to obtain quotes for gold plating copperhead blocks and an EVGA classified card. At the shop, viewers are given a tour of the plating facilities, including copper hooks for submerging parts, the different chemical tanks, and the safety considerations around caustic solutions like sodium hydroxide. The presenter shows the predissolution process and discusses why his smaller, nonheated tank will be used for his specific metal parts, noting that the large heated tank would not be suitable over an extended period. Throughout the visit, he references how the powder coating remains on some pieces initially but begins to show paint removal on certain backsides, signaling that more time will be needed for complete stripping. The video also provides context on other services the shop offers, including different plating options and polishing results, while the host emphasizes prior positive interactions with the shop and the potential next steps, such as sending parts to Mountain Mods for powder coating after stripping. The cadence blends technical demonstration with personal build aspirations, ending with a prompt to subscribe and a hint at the broader vision for the rig including possible gold-plated accents to complement the build’s overall aesthetic.
