The Wolf Among Us was the best game demo I played at the show. The combat was intense and visceral... and it was pure quick time events. I really really enjoyed it though. Probably the most interesting thing about it is the fact that this is just episode one and the devs are planning to use anonymously collected user data to tailor the experience of the future episodes to the way people are playing the game. The Wolf Among Us by Telltale Games at PAX 2013 presents a deep dive into how the studio intends to evolve its narrative approach after The Walking Dead. The interview with Nick Herman, co-director, emphasizes that Wolf Among Us shifts away from a purely dark and serious tone into a more nuanced experience that still respects its grim source material. The developers stress that Big B, the sheriff of Fable Town, embodies a conflict between power and responsibility, inviting the player to decide how to wield authority and how those choices shape both the character and the wider world. Viewers hear about the game’s distinct visual style, which sets it apart from previous Telltale titles, highlighting that the story adapts to the player’s actions in surprising ways, including what happens during combat. A core design pillar discussed is freedom at the micro level, where players control dialogue timing and the pacing of actions, such as whether to press for more information or move on, affecting future narrative branches. The team also explains that the combat system, while frantic, avoids punishing players with limited retries, allowing quick do-overs to preserve momentum and maintain focus on the story. The panelists underscore the broader aim of enabling players to craft a personal version of Big B, whether as enforcer or protector, while staying faithful to the fable town universe and the established canon from the comics. The interview closes with practical details about episode one’s release window and a reaffirmation that the game’s identity remains distinct from The Walking Dead, while still expanding the studio’s signature emphasis on player choice and narrative consequence. The overall takeaway is that Wolf Among Us is designed to reward expressive play and to explore how a player’s decisions ripple through the story, offering a fresh yet recognizable universe for fans and new players alike.
