Description

Here I take a look at the 5970 in terms of what kind of gargantuan case you're going to need to install this crazy thing. I'm using the Corsair 800D, but I suppose there might be a couple more cases out there that will support it. Seriously though, this thing is HUGE. Even gamer-oriented cases like the Antec 900 won't fit it without modifications.

This short Linus Tech Tips video demonstrates the practical challenges of installing a Radeon HD 5970 graphics card inside a full-tower case, specifically the Corsair Obsidian 800D. Linus begins by framing the video as a follow-up to the unboxing, emphasizing the card’s enormous size and the space requirements to fit it, including the possibility of needing a case that supports extra length beyond standard ATX motherboards. He notes the significant overhang past the motherboard edge, highlighting the need for ample case clearance or even extended cases to accommodate dual-slot GPUs like the 5970. The video then shifts to practical installation steps, showing the card mounted in the PCI Express slot and warning about the weight and potential strain on the slot if the case isn’t secured properly. Linus also points out how the motherboard’s SATA ports are positioned under the card, suggesting right-angle SATA connectors to maintain accessibility. To give perspective on the card’s scale, he quickly compares it to a much smaller 3850, underscoring how massive the 5970 is. He finishes with a cautionary note about securing the system to prevent movement or damage after installation. Overall, the video provides a concise, real-world look at whether a high-end, oversized GPU can physically fit and function in a given PC chassis, offering practical tips for enthusiasts considering similar builds.
