Description
right well the metaverse is in trouble again industry Legend John Carmack has announced he's leaving the company formerly known as Oculus he came on as CTO in 2013 before it was bought by the company formerly known as Facebook Carmack reduced his role to Consulting CTO in 2019 to focus on his artificial general intelligence or AGI company that raised 20 million dollars in funding this August personally I'd leave meta for way less than that but the Mac had also stated previously that the Zuck should focus on building VR Hardware instead of building the metaverse itself but according to Carmack the biggest reason he left was the inefficiency of the company saying that he's never been able to kill stupid things before they cause damage which is why he's trying to make AI a thing that could cause damage way smarter the damage will be very intelligently done not like meta
The short centers on a bruising assessment of the metaverse as a concept and Meta’s role in it, driven by the news that industry legend John Carmack is once again departing Meta. The narrative traces Carmack’s path from Oculus CTO in 2013 to his later consulting role and his AGI startup, highlighting his critique that Meta has historically struggled with eliminating inefficient ideas before they cause damage. The speaker reiterates Carmack’s contention that the biggest problem at Meta is organizational inefficiency, which impeded progress on building the metaverse itself. A key emphasis is Carmack’s belief that AI, particularly more capable, safer AGI, could perform smarter risk management than Meta’s current approach. The segment contrasts Carmack’s push for faster hardware and better software with Meta’s perceived overreach into a grand metaverse vision, implying a misalignment between strategy and execution. The takeaway is a warning that without substantial procedural improvements, the metaverse may remain stuck, with Carmack’s departure signaling renewed scrutiny of Meta’s long-term bets in this space.
