Description
This guy got sucked into the party lifestyle of the city. Drugs, alcohol, women, clubs. And it messed him up so bad. It messed him up so, and he was young. This guy's 18, 19. So for me, I can't watch Wolf of Wall Street. I can't watch it because I've seen what the dark side of this industry does to people. And I went to LSE, which is kind of a finance school. and I studied with guys who've memorized every line of dialogue of Patrick Bateman, Christian Bale and American Psycho and I don't want to show people a glamorous side of this industry because I see what it does to young men if you put stars in their eyes.
The short opens with a stark observation about the glamour and party lifestyle surrounding the finance world, highlighting drugs, alcohol, and clubs as part of the image that can corrupt young people. The speaker argues that watching The Wolf of Wall Street would be problematic because it glamorizes a lifestyle that they have seen cause real harm. They recount their personal experience studying at an economics-focused institution, noting conversations with peers who have memorized lines from Patrick Bateman, a character from American Psycho, to illustrate how cinema can shape impressionable minds. The central point is a critique of presenting a seductive finance culture to impressionable audiences, especially young men, without acknowledging the darker consequences. The message emphasizes responsible portrayals over glamorization, arguing that educators and mentors should guard against inspiring reckless aspirations. In summary, the short advocates for a more nuanced depiction of finance and its impacts rather than celebrating the excess associated with the industry, underscoring a broader concern about how media can influence career fantasies and personal choices.
