Description
Part two of our "building an external RAID enclosure for the Cameraman" project involves finding a suitable enclosure. I realize I'm a little late with this update, but I'm happy to say our latest NCIX Tech Tips video was actually edited on the RAID 10 array in this enclosure and the Cameraman is very impressed with the speed
The video opens with an unboxing of the Sans Digital Tower RAID TR4M with the black model, detailed as a four-bay enclosure intended for a Cameraman’s editing station. The presenter walks through the included accessories, noting the eSATA cable, a standard power cord, and the thumb screws for mounting up to four drives, as well as a PCIe x1 eSATA card that will not be used in this setup. He highlights the unit’s design features, including a shiny plastic finish on the front and sides, an 80 millimeter exhaust fan at the rear, eSATA interface, and a power switch and voltage selector for 115 or 230 volts. The front panel is described with activity LEDs for each drive, a host activity LED, and a power indicator, setting expectations for monitoring drive status during operation. The demonstration includes opening the case with three back screws to reveal the internal backplane and drive mounting system, followed by a practical drive installation using a Western Digital Black drive, which is slid in from the front and secured with the included thumb screws. The host notes that hot swapping would be ideal but acknowledges the price point makes it reasonable to proceed with a non-hot-swap setup, concluding that the enclosure is straightforward to use for assembling a four-bay storage solution. In closing, the presenter ties the unit back to the Cameraman’s workflow, underscoring how the RAID array accelerated editing tasks and demonstrating that the Sans Digital TR4M-B provides a solid balance between cost and performance for on-set or studio use.
