I’ve heard a lot of good reviews on the Toyota GT86 & Subaru BRZ but also a lot of people saying it's underpowered and slow. Nevertheless I had my eye on Copart and I thought I'd found the perfect crash damaged Toyota GT86, I put a low bid on it and I won! But sometimes the cheap cars turn out to be the most expensive as I later found out. #EP1 #GT86BUILD #SALVAGE

AI OverviewDefault language

The video follows Mat Armstrong as he dives into the world of affordable car builds by purchasing what he calls the cheapest crash damaged Toyota GT86 Subaru BRZ on Copart. He starts by explaining his initial perceptions of the GT86/BRZ as underpowered and not particularly fast, citing a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine with about 197 bhp, and comparing it to turbocharged rivals to frame the performance baseline. The bulk of the episode documents the purchase process, the initial condition assessment, and the surprising challenges that come with a salvage title, including missing or damaged parts like the bonnet, crash bar, radiator, and several mounts. He also highlights the car’s history, including receipts and previous ownership hints, to paint a picture of how a seemingly cheap project can spiral into a costly rebuild. The narrative emphasizes that while many parts are scarce or expensive, the potential for a rewarding build lies in transforming a rough donor into a personal project with widebody ambitions, upgrade potential, and a hands-on learning curve. By the end of the first segment, Mat establishes that the GT86 is not just about speed, but about the journey, the creative fixes, and the satisfaction of turning a bargain into a real, driven piece of art.

The car was acquired for four and a half thousand pounds. Initial issues included bonnet and crash-bar damage, radiator and coolant concerns, and several missing or damaged components.
Why is sourcing parts a major challenge for this project?
