At CES 2016 at the Sony booth Linus Tech Tips highlights Sony MESH, a modular Bluetooth IoT platform designed to make it easy to connect and program smart devices. He explains that MESH consists of small Bluetooth modules with different functions such as LED, a button, a sensor, a move sensor with a six-axis gyroscope, a brightness sensor, a temperature and humidity sensor, and a general purpose I/O module that can drive a vibration motor. The core idea is to let users create simple automation rules with an iPad or iPhone app using a drag-and-drop interface to assemble “if this then that” style recipes, including third-party integrations like Philips Hue. Linus demonstrates how you can double-click the button to trigger actions like turning a snowman purple, or turning lights on when a drawer is opened, illustrating how the system enables a wide range of creative projects without traditional programming. He notes that while the concept is powerful and the SDK and API support broad future expansion, the price point is a concern with individual modules around $50 to $60, which is a barrier for broader adoption. He envisions a future with broader compatibility, ideally Wi-Fi enabled and usable from a computer or dedicated hub, to avoid the current Bluetooth-only limitation and to better unify IoT ecosystems. The video closes with a tease of more CES coverage and a plug for Squarespace to build beautiful sites, underscoring the collaborative tech coverage around the show.
