Description

Contrary to all of the other information I was able to find (on official documents AND on the internet) you are NOT supposed to install Windows XP first, then request a downgrade from the product activation center. You are supposed to call Microsoft Customer Service at 1-800-936-5700 and request a downgrade BEFORE you install Windows XP.

The video presents a concise walkthrough of downgrading from Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate to Windows XP within the allowed period after Windows 7's release. Linus explains that for the first 18 months after October 22, 2009, purchasers could start with Windows 7 and temporarily use Windows XP through a downgrade process. The method involves calling Microsoft Customer Service at 1-800-936-5700, verifying the Windows 7 product key, and receiving a Windows XP product key in return. Viewers are instructed to obtain a Windows XP installation disk or ISO and install XP using the provided XP key, before eventually reinstalling Windows 7 when ready. The tutorial emphasizes that the XP license will be invalidated once Windows 7 is reinstalled, closing the downgrade loop. The overall takeaway is that downgrading is a supported, process-driven path rather than a straightforward field-restore from XP to 7, intended for scenarios where XP compatibility or performance is temporarily needed. The video aims to clarify the official steps, though it notes that official documents may sometimes differ from practical implementation, urging viewers to follow the Microsoft downgrade service steps precisely.
