Notes
The video follows Mat Armstrong as he continues the ambitious restoration and modification of an abandoned Laguna Seca blue E46 M3. It begins with a status check on the car, highlighting the extensive repair work already completed and the remaining tasks before paint, including addressing niggling issues and replacing worn components. The narrative emphasizes a shift from fixing to upgrading, with a focus on practical improvements like an Alcantara steering wheel cover, a new steering wheel appearance, and a repair approach that blends OEM intent with aftermarket enhancements. A major portion of the episode is devoted to diagnosing electrical gremlins and using Carly Connect Car to read fault codes, clear warnings, and test features such as keyless entry and live data monitoring. The video then pivots to performance upgrades, including a short shifter, Bilstein coilovers, and a dramatic brake upgrade featuring AMG six-piston calipers and E92 M3 discs, paired with a custom AMG-BMW caliper carrier. The culmination of the day sees a test fit to ensure clearance, a calibration attempt of the steering angle sensor, and an initial health check at BMW/Sytner, which confirms most systems are healthy with a few remaining mechanical tweaks, bringing the car closer to a fully sorted, road-legal, high-performance M3 once complete.
