Description

alright so what if I told you you can actually use airdrop one of those special Apple ecosystem features on Android so I first saw this from Michelle Roman on Twitter but basically there's an Android app called warp share that literally uses the airdrop protocol to send files directly from an Android phone to a Mac so I have to do is open up the app have your airdrop on the Mac set to everyone and then select the file you want to share and boom the computer sees it as a real airdrop now this app isn't actually on the Play Store you'd have to either side load it or compile it yourself but if you want something a little easier there's actually another one that you install on the Mac it's called near drop so this one works basically the exact opposite way of warp share with this you install the app on the Mac which gives it nearby share capabilities so now any Android phone with the ability to share to nearby share will see your Mac as an option boom basically the same thing obviously these will only work from an Android phone to a Mac not the other way around that's still restricted by something called Apple wireless direct link but hey if you want to share stuff on an Android phone to a Mac you don't need an iPhone

This short explains how to mimic Apple’s AirDrop on Android devices by using two third party tools that bridge the gap to a Mac. The presenter first introduces Warp Share, an Android app that uses the AirDrop protocol to send files directly from Android to a Mac, with the Mac side set to receive via AirDrop as a destination. He demonstrates the setup by opening Warp Share on Android, enabling AirDrop on the Mac to receive from everyone, and selecting a file to share, resulting in the Mac recognizing the transfer as if it were an actual AirDrop. The video notes that Warp Share is not on the Google Play Store, so users must side load it or compile it themselves, which adds a bit of friction but provides a functional workaround. For a more user friendly option, he mentions Near Drop, a Mac based app that enables Nearby Share capabilities on the Mac, allowing any Android device with Nearby Share to see the Mac as a transfer target. The key limitation highlighted is that these workflows operate from Android to Mac, not the reverse, due to Apple’s Wireless Direct Link constraints. The overall takeaway is that Android devices can share files to Macs using these tools, offering a practical cross platform workaround for users who need to transfer files without an iPhone. The video closes with a reminder that the approach is Android to Mac only, underscoring the broader ecosystem friction Apple’s ecosystem creates for cross platform sharing.
